Greetings Terry,
I’d second the suggestion on the Head First series.. It’s great for the
more visual learners.
Headfirst is a series of books that focus around balancing technical
knowledge with visual appeal. Its great for beginners and I’d recommend
the for Java and Design Patterns. I’ve read both and loved them while
I was first starting out – it was one of the few technical references
that I could read in bed and not fall immediately asleep.

Neil,
I really appreciate your help on this. I am trying to get geared up for
exam. So where do you work if I may ask? What is Head First Java series?
I know this maybe a dummy question.
Thanks,

Terry,
The best IDE is the one you feel most comfortable using. In my
experience the majority of professional developers either use Eclipse
(which is free) or IntelliJ IDEA (which isn't). Some folks also use
NetBeans.
Personally, I feel most comfortable with IntelliJ (and my company pays
for it), so that's what I use most of the time.
If you want to pass the SCJP exam, try SCJP Exam for J2SE 5: A Concise
and Comprehensive Study Guide for The Sun Certified Java Programmer Exam
(or whatever the current edition is) by Sanghera. I also found the Head
First Java series pretty good.
Cheers,
Neil
