Welcome to AJUG!
I prefer Netbeans and would recommend it to a beginner. It has a simpler
interface (but you give up some of the more advanced features). There is
just not a lot of clutter that may overwhelm someone new to it. IntelliJ is
my second, with eclipse being third. I have used all 3 for extensive
periods. I am currently forced to use eclipse at work.
You may have a look at BlueJ while you are learning (http://www.bluej.org).
