Neil,
I really appreciate your help on this. I am trying to get geared up for exam. So where do you work if I may ask? What is Head First Java series? I know this maybe a dummy question.
Thanks,

Terry,
The best IDE is the one you feel most comfortable using. In my experience the majority of professional developers either use Eclipse (which is free) or IntelliJ IDEA (which isn't). Some folks also use NetBeans.
Personally, I feel most comfortable with IntelliJ (and my company pays for it), so that's what I use most of the time.
If you want to pass the SCJP exam, try SCJP Exam for J2SE 5: A Concise and Comprehensive Study Guide for The Sun Certified Java Programmer Exam (or whatever the current edition is) by Sanghera. I also found the Head First Java series pretty good.
Cheers,
Neil
