I don't think that you are really getting 'bashed', a comment just sparked another conversation. It's what we do. I'll admit, I do have a short fuse when it comes to some types of questions. It is so easy to forget that we all started from somewhere.  

I do like this link though: http://catb.org/~esr/faqs/smart-questions.html  It is a really good guide.  

One of the biggest issue with noob questions on lists is that there is a high probability that the person asking the question is a student trying to shortcut their research. This is almost never tolerated. So, sometimes these types of questions do spark a little bit of hostility.

One, but major piece of advice: Do the exercises in your book(s).  Its the only way the information will 'stick'.  I've been researching Clojure for a while, but until I really started learning Lisp and doing the exercises consistently did I really (an I mean, really) understand recursion and the beauty of functional languages.
