Barclay,

It sounds like you have taken some good first steps towards learning the language.  If you want to take this to the next level you now are going to need to dig.  The web is full of open source Java projects that have a lot of great examples of style etc..  

It is one thing to learn Java,  and though that is a good goal in itself the question I would ask is why are you learning it?  To get a job?  Because you have heard about it?  Because you want to be a Software Engineer?  If you want to become a Software Engineer then I would recommend that you continue your education.  Though there are some who cling to the Java language like a baby clings to it's mother,  it is one of many tools used in the profession of creating software.  There is also more than one paradigm of programming these days,  you have procedural programming,  object oriented and functional.  Before you get caught up in the syntax,  make sure that you understand the paradigm,  concepts and goals of the language.  Otherwise it can be a very murky road.
