Agreed.  Not a good gauge.  But not a bad way to learn when you make a
career change.  Just like grad school :)

 From personal experience in hiring developers, I don't put much faith  
in certificates.  I'd rather hire someone with demonstrated experience  
who can tell me about previous work experience, describe problems and  
their solutions, etc. than someone who can take a test and pass.   
Passing the test, IMHO, is not a good gauge of ones development  
abilities.

However, the cert usually gets you past the first HR person to look at  
your resume...
