I mostly agree with Dan's comments and I would to point you to the
JavaPosse podcast #102
(http://www.javaposse.com/index.php?post_id=176698). In the post cast
the posse briefly discussed a very similar question. Although I am
personal no architect, my understanding is that an architect should have
a shallow knowledge of wide variety of technologies, deep knowledge in
some technologies. For example, say you have been working in the JSP/JSF
world and know the technology really really well. Still you may need to
know what CORBA is and how ORB operates in general. You don't really
have to know the tiny details of the IDL.
Also the AJUG, Burr in particular, is running the Architect user group
in Atlanta ( interview with Burr at
http://javaposse.com/index.php?post_id=39046). May be it is not a bad
idea to visit the group meetings from time to time. It should give you a
good feeling about the what is required to be an architect.
