[ajug-members] OCR Software/Methods Help

Dear AJUG,
 
I'm just looking for some recommendations on OCR software and/or
methodology.  Below is a description of what our company currently is
doing.
 
We receive thousands of checks each year from the IRS (all in the same
format).  We scan each check into a PDF using a high speed Canon scanner
(usually several hundred at a time)(.  A user then opens each PDF,
determines whom the check is for, and enters the PDF into our java based
document management system (so we could find Bob's refund check at a
later date and time).  I want to automate the process (and the people
doing the scanning want it even more than I do).
 
There are other types of documents we scan as well, but it's similar the
methodology as described above.  Any help and recommendations would be
gratefully appreciated (and remember, I have 0 experience and knowledge
of OCR).
