You could consider using the Jakarta POI classes to parse the .xls on the server
side, and then insert into the DB. I think the spreadsheet would have to be in a
very standard format - but it should work.
I've only used POI to parse word docs for a Lucene index, not the excel component.
You may have to get from CVS and compile yourself - but if you test well enough, you
should be reasonably confident that the code would be stable.
I've also heard that you can access the Open Office code from java somehow, if
you're on a platform that supports OO.
