I've found that your payment gateway is typically determined by what
bank/merchant bank you choose, although I suppose it could be done the
other way around.
I have had experience with both Verisign and Authorize.net, and found
them to be pretty similar to work with - no major problems with either
one. Both of these use XML via https for communication.
