[ajug-members] odd behavior with servlet init exception, Jbosss/Tomcat

I have a servlet running on JBoss 3.24/Tomcat 5 (on Linux). When we started the app server today, the servlet init method was throwing an exception. Again and again and again. 

If an exception is thrown in init, I'd expect the app server to not deploy the servlet instead of re-retrying. Can anyone shed any insite into this problem? I did some google searches and reviewed the JBoss and servlet docs but didn't find anything that addressed this issue.
