Do you remember when Salesforece.com nailed the coffin shut on Seibel Systems in the customer relationship management (CRM) market?  Seibel’s software was great, for Seibel’s management, salespeople, and army of consultants.  Long, expensive, risky and failure-prone projects proved to be a poor choice for customers. 

Today’s SCM market shares quite a few parallels with the CRM market earlier this decade. Top providers target their overpriced and bloated products toward the biggest 2,500 firms with the fattest wallets. Because of numerous installation challenges, better than 60% of provider revenues come from services and not the software of which they are so proud.  

Change is upon us.  According to Gartner’s estimates, today’s $5.5B SCM solutions market will grow by $2.5B over the next 5 years.  Here’s the punch line: virtually all growth will come from firms offering SaaS SCM solutions. For evidence of this shift, read some of the recent earnings announcements, paying particular attention to provider’s own estimates of future license sales.
