Manager, J2EE Development  (up to 30 direct and indirect reports)

The candidate
sought must be dependable, self-motivated team member to fill its position of Live Systems Support.
This role is responsible for all of the forward development (i.e. project work) efforts within the
Information Technology department. The Manager will work within the Information Technology team
responsible for producing Internet solutions for a media company. This position will manage the
forward development project team responsible for designing and development software solutions to
meet key stake-holder needs.

Job Responsibilities
−Lead Forward Development software project team
−Responsible for the software development for all of IT project initiatives
−Enforce the commitment to IT’s Software Development Life Cycle process and
methodologies
−Deliver high-quality applications utilizing industry unit testing products, patterns, and development
methodologies
−Mentor developers on best practices, methodologies, and design techniques
−Direct oversight and supervision of the Forward Development team
−Coach and develop team members
−Hire, fire, assess, disciple, document performance, recommend salary and position changes for
team members
−Coordinate development teams, project managers, quality assurance specialists, and all other
permanent and supplemental personnel to ensure project delivery success
−Establish, utilize, and manage outsourced development vendors and services
−Identify critical risk factors, along with mitigation tactics, taking initiative where required to ensure
uninterrupted project/service delivery
−Communicate project status, technology direction, and system/team health to senior management
−Research and evaluate new technologies coming to market and their potential application to strategies and business plans
−Responsible for the delivery of detail system documentation for each project delivered
−Ensure proper hand off of completed projects/products to the Support Team, including design
documentation and knowledge transfer sessions.
−Direct reports: 3 – 5
−Indirect reports (i.e. team size): 20 - 40
−Position reports to Director of Technology

Soft Skills
−Experience managing a software development team utilizing J2EE technologies
−Demonstrated technical project management
−Experience with Agile methodologies, preferably Scrum
−Results oriented and highly motivated
−Outstanding communication skills
−Articulate thoughts via written and oral communication
−Self-motivated and energetic
−Demonstrated leadership qualities
−Technologist at heart
−Online media experience a plus
Technical Skills
−J2EE design and development expertise, including JSP and EJB knowledge
−Working knowledge of J2EE application architecture patterns and development techniques
−Transactional, consumer facing, web application experience a must
−Familiarity with BEA Weblogic, Caucho Resin, JBoss AS, or other J2EE Application Servers
−Demonstrated knowledge of Inversion of Control and Dependency Injection concepts
−Java framework experience: Struts, Spring IoC, Spring MVC, Stripes, Struts 2, or other J2EE
frameworks
−Web technologies/standards: CSS, XHTML, HTML, AJAX, XML, HTTP
−Demonstrated experience with scripting languages Perl, PHP, Python, Ruby, and/or JavaScript
−Experience with unit testing tools JUnit, JWebUnit, and/or TestNG
−Demonstrated knowledge of code versioning systems and process, including products CVS or
Subversion
−Experience with development tools, such as XMLSpy, and IDEs Eclipse, NetBeans, and/or IntelliJ
−Relational database experience, preferably in Oracle or MySQL
