You may be surprised to learn that Smalltalk is still alive in the world
of education! To this day, Georgia Tech's Computer Science department
has an Objects and Design course, required for *all* CS majors, that is
taught entirely in Squeak. Squeak is an open source Smalltalk-based
programming environment, written in itself, and developed by Alan Kay &
team.

List,
Well, I know we had a sizable thread on Eiffel some months back,
but I
just have to ask what happened to Smalltalk. It is frequently praised
as a "better" or "more object-oriented" language than Java. Even the
GoF design patterns book uses it as one of the two languages for the
pattern examples. When Gavin King came to AJUG, he mentioned how he
had started out in Smalltalk - and he looks younger than me.
A Google search[0] revealed a number of Smalltalk sites,
including
development environments. Most of them show last updated values in
2003. A ComputerJobs search[1] with no restrictions and only
"smalltalk" entered returns 14 results, and only 4 of those actually
say "Smalltalk Developer" - the others are .Net (surprisingly) and C++.
So, what did I miss? What was the rise and fall of Smalltalk,
or is
it still alive and well? If so, where?
