J2EE Connection pool

Is there a generic way to get a database connection
from a J2EE 
container? I think that I want to use JNDI but the
examples that I have 
come across have vendor specific information in the
example. I would 
like a way that does not have to know what the vendor
is that is 
supplying the JDBC connection.
