Re: jobs

I would like to add to my earlier post that I think degrees from
well-known universities are becoming more important. Years ago, there
was such a demand for programmers that many companies did not care about
your degree. Now, many of those jobs are going to other countries and
what is left are the elite jobs that do pay well, but require well
rounded individuals with deep and broad knowledge that is hard to come
by without higher education and a few years of experience.

I was lucky. I graduated in 1989, when knowing the basics of nearly any
computer language was enough to get you a job. I never thought it would
get this bad. And I would not have realized how bad it was if I had not
spent 3 months looking for a job this year. If you are in the job
market, then you already know how competitive it is. There are still
good jobs out there, but there are so many people competing for them,
that is hard to be heard through all the noise. That's why making
person contacts is very beneficial - it gets you heard.
