DatabaseMetadata.getColumns not returning java.sql.BLOB for DATA_TYPE

Can some one help me with this problem:

I am having a serious problem with Database Metadata.

Toolset:

Database: Oracle 8.1.7
JDBC libraries: classes12.zip (shipped with Oracle 8.1.7)
JRE: 1.4.1_02

I am planning to generate JDO's for different tables in the database. When I am using DatabaseMetaData to retrieve the type of the column, I am getting java.sql.Types.OTHER as the column type for either CLOB or BLOB.

Can some one please throw some light on this issue? I am currently struck.
