tomcat on linux

For the first time i am trying to install/run tomcat on my machine. I seemed to
have installed everything fine, i.e., i am able to open up my first jsp page.
but now i am kinda stuck.

this application is created on a windows platform. my web application uses the
log4j logger to log errors and other messages. They get logged into the file,
but nothing is being displayed in the std output. The problem i don't know what
is supposed to be the standard output. Unlike tomcat in windows there is no
shell/dos window running. When i started tomcat in linux it just starts up
saying

Using CATALINA_BASE: /usr/java/jakarta-tomcat-4.0.2
Using CATALINA_HOME: /usr/java/jakarta-tomcat-4.0.2
Using CATALINA_TMPDIR: /usr/java/jakarta-tomcat-4.0.2/temp
Using JAVA_HOME: /usr/java/j2sdk1.4.1_01

and then back to the shell prompt. so how do i get my output to the standard
output. hopefully once i get my errors out i'll be able to solve the other
problems from there.

Thank you
