This is not substiantive help, but I have trouble shot SQL that failed 
in criptic
ways through JDBC that worked perfect via sqlplus, toad and sqlnavigator.

I just subdivided the sql or simplified (or just fidled with it) till it 
worked via
my JDBC driver and DB.   I had troubles with nested selects (3 deep) etc.

My hearts to ya, man!   Good luck and let us know what worked.
