Re: Java reporting tools

Regarding speed:

Jasperreports (JR) wants your data to be sorted from
the database for report level grouping and general
sorting. So, data processing is left to the database
- which as you know is something databases are adept
at. This allows JR to simply create your resultset
and load it into the report. Makes for fast
reporting. Although we did not perform formalized
load testing, it didnt seem noticeably any slower than
Crystal reports.

JR affords you a lot of flexibilities with regard to
report data sources (sql resultset, java objects,
etc.), output options (pdf, xml) and various others.
If you are using a JSP container to preview, you'd
have to write out to byte stream and the use a
servlet.

iReports: http://sourceforge.net/projects/ireport
It written in J++, so might be limited to Windows or
iReports.

Hope this helps.
