OT: Why so much work?

Hey all,

I just spent the afternoon with a good friend of mine who I really enjoy
speaking with because he works lends him to be purely a VB.NET developer.
He and I trade implementation stories and talk about technologies that
J2EE and VB.NET share but just implement differently.

Today we spoke about web services and some distributed architecture items.
As we talked I realized that his life seemed to be so much easier with
regards to development. He talked about cross-browser rendering issues
being taken care of him inside of a component. He also spoke
ethusiastically about how simplistic it was to implement a web service
with VB.NET.

Now granted, being somewhat bias, I came back with the retort. So you can
develop your applications faster than me; that seems to be a fact. But you
can't deploy cross-platform and you are stuck with proprietary software
with high licensing fees.

... he and muttled on about this for hours...

Anyway, it just seems like sometimes we Java developers put up with some
much, 'hand configuration' when VB.NET allows my friend to put together an
application that runs on native code fast in a couple of weeks. Without
editing a single XML configuration file.

It's hard to really get the spirit of the conversation I had with my
friend today in an email but none-the-less I'm sure this will start some
interesting discussion. :)

Kevin
