You can set up Java compilation by setting the option 'makeprg'.  I prefer,
instead, to use Shad Gregory's ANT plugin to do my compilation.
I'm not arguing that vim provides the same out-of-the-box experience of an
IDE, but in the 4 months since I started using vim I've been very pleased at
what a full-featured development environment it can be.
