RE: IDE+VIM=(mmmm....Donuts) [RE: Java recommendations for young students?]

SlickEdit from Microedge will do vi emulation, but is not a free tool
nor is it specifically designed from the ground up as a Java IDE. Its
more of a code editor with a lot of neat features. It will also do
others such as GNU Emacs, Brief, Epsilon, etc.

Also, I think can kick-off a vim editor (or any other editor) from
within Visual Age when you go into edit mode. Eclipse will allow you to
do the same. I would prefer Eclipse because its open source.

Speaking of IDEs. Anyone know of any IDE that has vim(not visual
interdev)
keymappings? I know neither JBuilder not Jdeveloper have it. Not sure
about
forte.

Thanks,

I believe this was discussed on the list a while ago...

If she's the more geeky type, then I believe your daughter will have a
great
time with this.

As for the IDE, don't worry about that. I personally still use vi and
can't
stand the IDEs out on the market now. She should be learning to code,
not to
use a tool.
