I have done volunteer work for 'Hands on Atlanta', their CitiCares website was going through quite a bit of change at one time. 

I can't say it's really helped me though. I have an MIT with hands-on client/server and web experience, and, 12 years of mainframe and consulting experience. When I would check with the people at Hands on Atlanta to see if anyone called for references, they told me noone had. 

But it definately can't hurt, and you can gain some good experience.
