AJUG is TONIGHT!
Introduction to Java Web Programming: JavaServer Pages 2.0 & JavaServer
Faces
Date: August 19, 2003
Start Time: 6:30 pm for general discussion and networking
Presentation: 7:00 to 9:00 pm
Place: Holiday Inn Select - 4386 Chamblee Dunwoody Rd, Atlanta, GA 30341
(770) 457-6363
Exit 30 - one exit east of Ashford-Dunwoody off 285.
Description:
The topic for the general discussion will be focused on the local job
market. There are a few job openings that I'm aware of that we'll discuss,
plus some of been posted recently on www.ajug.org/jobs.
The presentation will focus on Java's ability to create dynamic,
server-side, web-based applications. At JavaOne 2003, Sun announced that
they intend to grow the Java development community from 3 million today to
10 million in the near future. In order to achieve this lofty goal, Java and
J2EE must become dramatically easier to use to attract the ASP+VBScript,
PHP,
ColdFusion, Perl, Visual Basic and PowerBuilder developers of the world. JSP
2.0 includes enhancements to the JSP Standard Tag Library (JSTL), Expression
Language (EL) and custom tag handlers (.tag). These updates plus JavaServer
Faces are aimed directly at web page authors who prefer "scripting"
languages and drag&drop tools. Technologies discussed and demonstrated: JSP
2.0, JSTL, EL, JSF - JavaServer Faces, JWSDP 1.2 - Java Web Services
Developer Pack (includes Tomcat 5) and some Struts.

September Meeting with Dave Thomas
Session Abstract:
Decoupling Patterns -- untangling that knot of code by Dave Thomas. We all
know what highly coupled code feels like: make a minor change over here, and
suddenly things start acting funny over there, and over there, and... So how
do we avoid this? It turns out that following a few basic rules can stop
this mess from happening. See how "The Jolly Good Suggestion of Demeter" and
Pina Colada mixing (among other topics) will help you write better software.
Speaker Bio:
Dave Thomas is recognized internationally as an expert who develops
high-quality software--accurate and highly flexible systems. He helped write
the now-famous Agile Manifesto, and regularly speak on new ways of producing
software. He is the author of two books, including the best selling The
Pragmatic Programmer: From Journeyman to Master (Addison-Wesley) and
Programming Ruby: A Pragmatic Programmer's Guide (Addison-Wesley).
